(This is long and probably boring post if you aren't interested in gardens or don't remember our yard that well. I realized that I kind of made this post for me so that I can see the progress and keep dreaming of future progress. :-)
I'm so excited to be able to do a post on the yard progress! It has certainly been a long process of fitting it in around hot weather that gives me headaches in an instant, teaching, and trying to keep the boys and house running. But God is gracious and gave me an unusual number of days this summer that were cooler to work out there. I'm realizing that it will take at least another year to complete.
Beginning of the summer after a beautifully rainy spring.
Starting to experiment with the shape of the border after LOTS of weeding/digging.
Area by shed dug, landscape fabric placed and stones laid.
Mr. Peter and Dad replaced the leaning fence post.
Now I don't worry about Danny playing over there!
Patio cleaned up and lights hung for pleasant evenings
Dug, landscape fabric, and stones laid
I'm hoping the area above will eventually look more like this...
Main area taking shape
Overall view. Next year I'm going to work on the area on the right side of the sandbox. The 3x10' area about where the trash can is will house a raised cedar vegetable garden...
...that might look something like these...
Danny enjoying the cool shade in the Blue Spruce Globosa hole
I was so excited to receive my order from High Country Gardens. They are based in Santa Fe, NM and specialize in varieties of perennials that are water-wise and grow well in high altitudes. I've always dreamed of ordering from them (since I can't find the variety at the local nursery) and Chris told me to go ahead and make an order, so I had to obey!! ;-) They were packed so carefully and looked wonderful!!
Someday I'll get a new top for this birdbath...
I'm envisioning a cross between these two pictures for the area pictured above.
Area by shed looking better
The tomato cages are protecting the new plants from the merciless feet of Danny boy. ;-) We'll be getting enough mulch to cover all the gray fabric eventually.
I'm envisioning a cross between the pictures below for the area above with a garden obelisk where the upside-down pot is (for the roses to grow up and around). I have several roses and lavender plants through there and other pink accent plants.
As the other areas started coming together, we realized that the stone wall needs to continue around to the side of the house...Then the bush needed to come out. Chris has been working on that gross job for me! What a hero! Eventually we'd like to try training the grape vine onto the wall in more of a pattern...and maybe replace it with a red seedless variety (instead of a Concord Grape).
The stones will be two high through this area. It feels like a hidden little woodland over there. Very cool!
One of my prized bushes! It is supposed to survive in hardiness zone 5. We shall see. It is a Ruby Slippers Oakleaf Hydrangea. I fell in love with this little guy and was able to buy him 30% off at the end of the season. Every time I was at the nursery I'd make sure he was still there and at last, he got to come home with me! ;-) It gets beautiful flowers in summer and the leaves turn coppery red in the fall.
Example of flowers from the net...
...and fall foliage
And this little guy is another favorite, supposedly okay in zone 5. Dwarf Crape Myrtle 'Chickasaw'
I love how it looks like a Christmas plant (other than the flowers are purple). It looks beautiful with the Blue Spruce Globosa and stones.
Here's another view of the area for the raised vegetable garden and an example of how it might look with pavers around/under the sandbox. The stones will be two high all the way around back of the sandbox, but I ran out for now.
Next year's plan is to start an intensive grass thickening/weeding/greening program that I found instructions for, build a raised vegatable garden and garden obelisk, work on the area to the right of the sandbox, lay pavers under the sandbox and an extension of the patio, apply rust converter to the shed and paint, and work on the skinny area on the side of the house by the trash cans. There's no way I'll get it all done! Hehe, but I have to dream.
